Choose where savings are held under Ways of living. Displayed returns are averages after inflation; losses, country-specific fees and selling costs still matter.
Find the savings allocation control
Open Spend & invest, expand Ways of living and read How to invest. Savings stay in a bank unless you choose another option. Selecting a new allocation moves the savings; the interface warns that selling can incur fees and, depending on the country, tax on gains. Repeated switching is not costless.
If you owe money, selecting stocks does not borrow to invest. At 21 our character had $3,681 owed. The game recorded that there was no money to invest and that saved money would enter stocks after the debt was paid. Check the debt and belongings panels before assuming you already have an invested balance.
Compare the options shown in your country
These are the menu’s stated averages, not independently measured guarantees. The available set and fees can change after migration.
| Option | Displayed description | Main distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Savings | 1–1.5% yearly after inflation | Default bank holding |
| Bonds | About 2% average | Small swings |
| Balanced fund | About 3.5% average | Medium swings |
| Stocks: index | About 5% average | Big swings |
| World index | About 5% average | Exchange-rate swings and extra fees |
| Property fund | About 3.5% where offered | Separate from owning a home |
| Pick and trade shares | Most earn less than the index | Fees, taxes and trading decisions matter |
Do not turn an average into a winning formula
Our first ten-year stock review at 31 reported a $9,287 loss and said bank savings would have left about $10K more. Later gains did not make the allocation safe: a 47% crash logged at 57 produced $357K of stock losses in the age 58 annual panel. Net worth there was $566,516, down from an observed $936,310 at 57.
The same downturn also hit work at the law firm. Investments and business income therefore did not reliably protect each other in this run. If you need money for expansion, family costs or retirement, compare that need with the potential for a large fall. This is a planning lesson from observed outcomes, not a tested optimal allocation.
Separate three kinds of property
Buy a home concerns the character’s own residence. Homes to let concerns direct rental ownership. A property fund is a savings allocation where available. Their financing and costs are not interchangeable.
Bangladesh rental terms required buying without a loan; Malaysia allowed borrowing up to 50% of the price. We bought a roughly $71K rental at 37, paying $2,143 in taxes and costs in addition. It produced rent, but its value changed, and at 51 it stood empty for six months after a tenant left. Check vacancy, upkeep and fees rather than treating the rental-income line as a guaranteed annual payment. Your own-home mortgage is a separate offer.
Recheck fees whenever circumstances change
The global-index description showed about 1% extra annual fees in Bangladesh and 0.5% in Malaysia. Reusing the old country’s numbers would misstate the new choice. After moving, reopen the menu and read the current allocation, available alternatives and exit costs before changing anything. All amounts and returns here describe the game, not a real-world investment recommendation.
