Research ideas, compare financing and read the expansion warning. Our first law office sold for $231K; the second lost a $295K expansion and eventually closed.
Research first; decide later
As an adult, open Spend & invest and expand More. Look into starting a business was free in our age 26 menu and said the character would weigh ideas before deciding the next year. After selecting it, verify the life-record entry. You have begun research, not yet bought a company.
At 27, the resulting decision offered a law office for about $30K, a factory for $95K, a phone shop for $38K and a restaurant for $46K. The law office was labeled close to the character’s existing work. Not yet kept the current job. Your offers can differ, so inspect their stated cost and familiarity.
Read the financing decision before committing further
Choosing the law office led to a separate question about paying for it. In our case, a smaller $12K start was unavailable, while a partner route was possible. The record later showed a $6,091 payment and said the partner-owned office was getting by.
This does not mean the company’s advertised $30K cost vanished or that every poor character can open one for $6,091. It means the financing choice changed what this character could start. Keep the actual terms and recorded payment distinct from the initial headline price.
- Review your current savings, debt and upcoming family costs.
- Choose an offered idea only after reading its cost and stated context.
- Read the follow-up financing options; do not assume personal savings are the only route.
- Check the life record for the payment and whether the business actually opened.
Budget for growth and weak years
The first office expanded at 31 for about $17K. The character became senior partner, yet annual net worth fell $8,298 after growth and family costs. That office later survived a sharp downturn. A higher title and continued survival did not mean expansion paid for itself immediately.
In Malaysia we started a second office with savings at 40 and expanded at 45. At 49, a further $295K expansion offered a managing-partner role but explicitly warned the money could be lost. We chose Grow it. The record confirms the attempt failed and all $295K was lost; the character stayed a senior partner. Affording an expansion does not make its return certain.
Count the personal cost and the exit
The first office was handed over for $231K during migration at 36, after years of overwork and a failed marriage. That was a successful financial exit with personal costs, not proof that every business can be sold profitably.
The second office did not repeat that exit. Its record says it closed at 58 after failing to ride out a slump. At 59 the character was looking for work; the best-paying offered option was salesperson at $14,877 a year, far below the $204,974 personal income shown at 49. The other offers were street vendor or security guard. Keep a reserve and inspect fallback work before assuming your current business income can continue.
